A Christmas poem for Baby Jesus

Waiting for the Day

When I was very little
And you were very new,
I often thought about you
And your mother Mary too.

I knew we were the same age,
You were born when I was two.
I remember it like yesterday
For they told me it was you.

"This is baby Jesus.
He'll always know your name.
He'll take care of you now.
That's really why He came.

Your mother and your daddy
Have gone and left you here.
Baby Jesus will never leave you.
You'll never have to fear."

I heard about the drummer boy
And how he sweetly played.
I was so very jealous
And would have loved to take his place.

Just to see you in the manger,
Mother Mary by your side
Would have made me oh so happy
I would have laughed until I cried.

And all the angels singing,
And Joseph there with pride
To help take care of Baby Jesus
With Mary by his side.

It really made me happy
To know you were so loved
By all who came to see you
From afar and from above.

What happened, someone asked me.
Did Jesus go away?
No, I said, He wouldn't
He'd never act that way.

I found out some time later,
I can't remember, thought they lied.
Jesus went to the cross in agony.
Gave up the "ghost" and died.

I finally grew up myself,
Though barely able to get by.
I missed the Baby Jesus
Being daily by my side.

But on days like these in Iowa,
When snow flakes scour the skies,
I think of Baby Jesus,
And I can't help but smile.

I hear, "Come, sing for Baby Jesus
He's coming again they say.
He never really left you.
He'll be back again some day."
