Free verse. A call to action? A love poem? Something else entirely? All 3 and then some.
You lay upon the sand between your lover and the sea.

You lay there, watching the whirling stars and he slept on.

You lay there, mind wandering from past to present.
And then back again.

Circling love
Circling life
Spiralling in upon yourself

And still he slept on

The waves licked higher then fell back, defeated by the orbiting moon.

You thought of all possibilities.
The futures hidden beside paths un-trod.

You considered the possibility of dreams.

Dreams snaking into your soul
Dreams coiling about your heart
Dreams demanding expectations

And still he slept on

Did he dream?

Dawn’s cool hand reached out across the fertile water
And with gentle fingers caressed your side.

'C'mon' you roused him with a shake
'There is a land for the living.
You'll have time enough for dreaming when you’re dead.'
