A poem about a hangin'
From The Chronicles of Death

A Hangin'

There's gonna be a hangin' today
and I'm the main attraction.
I hear the hangman comin' for me
jury's waitin' for satisfaction.

They'll lead me up the steps alone,
I'll turn and face the crowd.
My time is growin' shorter now,
Death is hidden in a shroud.

Then they ask me for my final words,
I say,"This should make you sad!"
"Go ahead and hang me if you will,"
"but I never did anything bad."

I'll take one last look at the sky
before the lights get up to go.
I wasn't guilty of killin' that boy
now only God and I will know.

They slip a noose around my neck,
then snug it nice and tight.
I hear the trap door lever pulled,
never more to see the light.
