another attempt at the 300 word flash fiction
“Wow, I don’t believe it.” I rolled up the treasure map with care not to rip the delicate paper. I snuck it away with finesse that surprised even me.

I walked back to my one room walk-up apartment and spread the map out on the cluttered table. The treasure was sure to be in a cave at the center of the map. I decided to go the next day and invest in spelunking equipment.

I went and bought all the equipment the salesman suggested. A thousand dollars seemed a little excessive, but who am I to argue. Then I went to a bookstore and got a book so I could figure out how all the equipment was to be used. That night all I could think about was all the things I would buy with the money.

I packed my rusted out 1969 Volkswagen Beetle until it was an overstuffed blimp. I left on my adventure at six the next morning.

I put the map on my lap so I could refer to it as I made my way. A few miles south of town I picked out the clues from the map and found a good place to stop. I parked and geared up.

Paying twenty dollars for the guided-tour, I was surprised that it was such a tourist spot. The treasure must be hidden deep inside. I planned on ditching the group once deep in the cave but the guide kept a very close eye on me.

After ten hours of exhausted search I thought. “Boy, that map was wrong!” The rescue workers, or the Carlsbad Cavern National Park Rangers as they preferred to be called, were curious about my map. They shook their heads in disbelief and told me,”Ma’am that is just a placemat.”
