A mainly humorous poem about old photographs with a poignant ending.
*Exclaim* To avoid unintentionally offending non-Brits, in British slang a fag is another term for cigarette.

Old photographs

Old photographs are a bunch of laughs.
The clothes, the hair, the vacant stare;
No rhyme or reason for wearing each season
Of fashion.

The family picnics that made you sick;
The boat trip, where you felt rather hip
And trendy in your platform shoes,
With highwayman jacket and bottle of booze [Dad].

Old hag with a bag, smoking a fag*;
(Oh, wait, that’s me granny!)

Disco Dave, medallion man,
Complete with chest wig and fake orange tan.
To me, he’s always been Uncle David;
If he knew I had this he’d be livid!

The next batch looks distinctly Eighties;
The decade which I consider the worst
For music and fashion. I must have been cursed
To grow up through that mess!
It makes me depressed;
But I have digressed,
On to the next…

Now, this next character
Looks vaguely familiar;
A podgy-faced bloater
With Chris Evans** specs…

Wait a second…
No!
It cannot be!!
That’s not me!!!
(Yes, it’s me)
As the disturbing image leaves me perplexed;
What was I thinking? [Chris Evans specs…]

Photo memorabilia is common to all;
Nostalgia on celluloid, short, long and tall.
The good, the bad, the happy, the sad;
All kinds were taken, mainly by Dad.

Down through the ages the photographs speak
Of days gone by; some happy, some bleak,
But memories all the same.
To be passed on to our future clan;
A record for every child, woman and man
That are accepted of worth -
By law or by birth -
Of our proud family name!

Appendage
