is our greatest enemy
The Tongue

The world in all its wisdom
cannot begin to see,
that we have within ourselves
the greatest enemy.
-
We use a tiny rudder
to turn the ship our way,
while we let our foolish tongue
go free to have its say.
-
And often out of habit
unthinkingly I guess,
allow the smallest member
to make the biggest mess.
-
As skillful as a serpent
this tool left uncontrolled,
turns out to be the greatest
of weapons one can hold.
-
To wound without a reason
no thought to limb or life,
it boasts of all its greatness
while cutting as a knife.
-
Without a thought of mercy
the best that I can tell,
this thing is filled with poison
and set on fire of hell.
-
Who then is there to tame it
and who will take control,
but He who is the Master
and Savior of the soul.
