A break in a relationship
The Break

The break happened oh so suddenly
As a fissure in the earth is apt
To take God-fearing people by surprise
So it was to hear that our love
Had fled like an illegal immigrant
From that shriveled thing, your heart

So I dressed in black for a few days
And I mourned, my lost love
I was faithful to you even when
I knew that you were not coming back
Like Penelope with her suitors I waited
Weaving funeral looms and taking them apart at night
Still, I have waited too long, lost love
Though I have my colors, I am old
My hand is constantly at my heart
Like Mary standing before the Cross
I have chopped up that great bed of ours
I, myself, held the ax
I have had made a chinet set
That will stand in my new home
I gae you certain things, my lost love
You did not want them, so I took them back
Now they sit like treasures on shelves, waiting
Unlike Jesus patient at the door
I won't be there when you come back.
