Tell me... why?
Why is the sky blue
And not lavender, magenta, or peach?
Why does two plus two equal four
And not five, seven, or fish?
Why did Hitler hate Jews
And not Buddhists, Christians, or Republicans?

Why do people fear what is different
Yet they praised Picasso for uniqueness?
Why do we define up and down
Yet the world has no real top or bottom?
Why is only physical abuse illegal
Yet mental abuse is a much deeper bruise?

Why do we go over to a country to stop death
Only to get there and kill more people?
Why do people buy so many things
Only to pack them in storage and replace them?
Why do we ask people how they are
Only to walk past too quickly to hear a response?

Why do we breathe
Even when we don’t think about it?
Why do we smile
Even when we don’t want to?
Why do we cry
Even when we try our hardest not to?

Why can love
Be both feared and relished?
Why can evil
Be so hard to define?
Why can pride
Have good and bad intentions?

Why isn’t the world flat
So its contents could spill over like a toppled glass?
Why aren’t grapes currency
So you can pelt your payment at peoples’ faces?
Why isn’t there an uncorrupted government
So that maybe the world can be honest with itself?

Why can’t people fly?
Why are there so many different beliefs?
Why is there language?
Why did someone invent foam soap?

Why do people lie?
Why do people define?
Why do people think?
Why do people feel?

Why do people ask questions?
