wrote this 2 weeks after i had my 1st serious history lesson
It’s a free country people say,
But to this judgement, I dismay.
For they say it in sarcasm or spite,
But for this saying, they have no right.
For think of all the men that perished,
For the country they did cherish.
Leaving family and lovers behind,
And watching friends and comrades die.
To hear the Major say “over the top.”
To the on slaughter of German’s guns going pop.
Shooting them all out, line by line,
In the land of forgotten time.
Millions lost and nothing gained,
And for them to lie in muddy graves.
Forgotten names, faces and looks,
To figures and facts in history books.
No one remembers, no one wants to know,
For those men that have lost their glow.
So think before you state the countries cost,
Of all those damaged and all those lost.
Defending our country against the threat of invasion.
To me they are our heroes and our salvation.
