Explains how diversity is all around us.
As I look around the room, I notice very unusual objects throughout.  I begin to look at the left side of the room.  There are various posters hung haphazardly about the walls. They have to be another class’s work. In the corner suspended from the ceiling is a colorful flying dragon.  Once you have finished looking up at the dragon, your eyes look off into the distance through the window.  The most prominent objects by far are the buses.  The bright yellow paint contrasts against the dark hues of the asphalt.  There are also pine trees, palm trees, birds, and humans.  Moving from the window my attention is drawn to the back wall where there is memorabilia only a Chicago Bulls fan would have.  Of all the objects only one stands out.  I don’t know what it is.  Maybe it is the boldness of the frame, or the fact that it’s an autographed Michael Jordan Jersey.  It is defiantly an eye catcher.  In the right corner there is a poster of the legendary boxer Muhamad Ali.  With the poster hangs a small pamphlet also about Ali.  As I begin to shift my focus from the back of the room, it becomes obvious that this is a classroom.  There are numerous bookcases filled with a wealth of information.  Cold silver-metallic file cabinets are lined up single file along the right wall.  Out of everything in the room, the things that captivate me the most are the masks.  They are so unique; some are large, others are small, some colorful, and the rest are monochromatic.  They grace the wall from top to bottom.  Some are so interesting; you could sit and stare at them all day in complete awe.  Each mask has a story, an origin, and a life.  Finally, the students are the most important part of the room.  Similar to the masks, the students also have a substantial variety.  From light to dark, short and tall, not one individual is the same.  Contrary to what some people may think, diversity is all around us.  We must embrace the fact that we are all different.  We all come from different backgrounds, cultures, heritages, and societies.  Everyone, like the masks, has a story, an origin, and a life.  Personally, I feel that the masks are a great representation of the individuals in this class.  The following quote by Franklin Thomas explains it all.  “One day our descendants will think it incredible that we paid so much attention to things like the amount of melanin in our skin or the shape of our eyes or our gender instead of the unique identities of each of us as complex human beings.”
