Poem about the self under the surface
The Burden

Inbetween all the jokes
That made you smile
Was the shadow
Of a history
The outline of a mystery
You could not discern
Amid the ordinary small talk
Of the moment
Was the silent soliloquy
The unspoken story
No one ever learns
By heart
Like an unexpected kiss
Or a love that comes
And goes
In fits and starts
Passion charges
The soul
But pain lingers
Like a mist after a rain
From the hurricane
That blows us
Apart
Once again
I think now
I was wrong
To give you a glimpse of me
To uncover your eyes
To the sight usually hidden
From all but me
I regret putting into words
The thoughts that cut like swords
Through dull consciousness
The dark side
Of the bright side
Of all of this
This sea of humanity
That has no equanimity
This ocean of emotion
That knows no depth
