Broken Eyes
Broken Eyes
I saw her on the city street,
Eating a 3 day old burger.
Her clothes were tattered, worn, and beat,
So I handed my coat to her.
I said “Honey, looking at you,
It seems you’ve been through rough days.”
She looked up like a child would do,
And said “I deal with it anyway.
My daddy was a big, mean drunk,
My mom was always a druggie.
I’m like them, just another flunk,
So please ma’am don’t waste your money.”

But I saw something deep inside
Those deep blue, tired, broken eyes.

I saw her pain, I saw no hope.
I saw her face say “Help me please.”
I saw her there with my coat,
People passing like she’s diseased.
I knew I had to help her out,
And though I didn’t have that much,
I then put those last dollars down.
And her fear slowly lost its clutch,
And before she could say a word,
I had already walked away.
But I smiled knowing her
Broken eyes would have joy today.
