Norma has had a very long day and it just got longer.
Air was whistling through a little crack in the window's gasket. No matter how hard Norma tried to pull the handle it wouldn’t stop the leak. It was the perfect end to her day. It was Friday and the kids were louder than usual. All she wanted was to get home.
As she turns on to the turnpike she looks out her window and see the cars in front of her are wet. Strange weather, she thinks to herself, it almost looks like the gods are choosing which automobiles to dance on.
Norma knows to be careful on the roads when it first starts to rain, oil slicks are everywhere. She continues on the road singing along with the music trying to get the children’s rhyme songs out of her head. If she has to sing the Wheels on the Bus one more time her wheels will go round and round.
Norma is excited. Tonight she is finally going out with Kevin, the new second grade teacher. He just finished a tour in the Middle East and he seems very interesting and full of life. He won’t be like the last four dates she has been on where the guys all seemed interested in baseball and kids. There’s that thought again, kids. I don’t want to think about kids all weekend.
Norma tries to enjoy the music but the day is playing out in her head. All her lessons for the morning happened, but right after lunch it when everything fell apart. I have to figure out a way to focus them after lunch. I can’t believe I am thinking about this again, come on Norma think about tonight and what to wear.
Norma decides to change the music in hopes that it will change her mood, but her mind drifts back to school. There is a student she has been wondering about. Collin. He is always quiet and plays by himself. The other kids don’t seem to notice him and he doesn’t seem to really care. Norma has tried to integrate him. Collin is very intelligent and really enjoys fantasy play. She doesn’t understand why he would rather play with imaginary friends rather than real ones. Norma has been teaching for six years. The little boy is her first experience with Asbergers and she doesn’t know how to handle him.
I really should do some research this weekend on that disorder.
Rain starts to pelt down now. Fall storms are always strong and fast. Norma slows down so she can see the road. The traffic is going very slow now. She can’t see the wreck, but her experience tells her that there is one and everyone has to rubberneck in hopes of seeing a mangled body.
Norma travels on trying to forget her day and tries to focus on the music. She looks down to get her cell phone out of her bag and then it happened. Her car glided over the road like it was ice. She was trying not to panic but she grabbed the wheel and turned it hoping it would not hit traffic. Norma could hear herself scream and before she knew what happen she felt her beast slammed right into another monster. Puffs of air bags surround her and deflate in an instant.
Norma gets out of the car to look at the damage. She sees that she hit a Hummer. The only damage done to that beast was a scratch, while her car is bent and mashed in by two feet.
Norma sees the woman driving. She is talking to someone, as Norma gets closer she sees it two children. She is checking them and making sure everything is all right. Norma can see that she is calming them down; she waits outside in the rain for the woman. As she opens the door Norma can hear the blaring music, The Wheels of the Bus…
