A glimpse into a middle-aged woman's troubled mind
Thank you Gothic Angel gone for the pretty black ribbon!

Closer

She sheds a tear for chances lost.
Steps closer to the ledge.
Who knew it came at such a cost?
Her sacrifice her pledge.

Her youth now gone.
Her beauty faded.
Martyrdom is overrated.

The children have now grown and gone,
With children of their own.
Will comfort come with early dawn?
Despair by then have flown?

Am I alone?
Does no one care?
Is everyone so unaware?

All the things she could have done,
And all the things she didn’t.
Ulterior needs of others won.
Her shattered dreams kept hidden.

It’s come to pass,
Her biggest fear.
Thieves just took another year.

Her graying hair blows in her eyes
Atop that windy roof.
She’d show those deafened to her cries.
She would provide them proof.

No one to say,
“We love you so.
We need you. Please don’t go.”

She sheds a tear for chances lost.
Her sacrifice her pledge.
Who knew it came at such a cost?
She steps off the ledge.
