Weekly entry in Poetry League "Battles" Description of a Tornado
Flashes of a Whirlwind

By

Richard Vance

The air, so warm, so humid closes in,
So often makes the simple act of breathing hard,
A subtle change is all around,
It’s greeting card is surely felt.
.
A blend of random elements combine
To suddenly create a troubled scene,
Not so far it seems, from the horizon in the west,
Approaching silently and fast.

A subtle message from an angry God,
And perhaps, an incoherent murmur’s heard,
The echo of a distant train that rumbles somewhere
Out beyond the here and now.

The raindrops holding fast in earthbound clouds,
All in all, not a single movement of the air is felt,
But there at once, the monster’s silhouette is seen
Against the angry darkened sky.

So clearly I can see the Dragon’s evil eyes,
As it picks it’s targets out in such a random way,
No thoughts as to whom the victims are,
So much destruction falls around.
.
The somber song is brought about on Satan’s breath,
And whispers lies of reassurance to the souls who
Take the time to gaze up in the sky, and opt
To question motives of the ancient wind.

Heard, so loud, above the wind, the violent voices
From the past, speak out and claim without a doubt,
That they have visited this place so many times before,
So Again, it rears it’s jealous, unforgiving head.

Spin so tall into the sky, skipping here and there,
Touching down, always randomly it seems,
Taking life without regard to youth or age,
Purely formed in nature’s realm,

A storm, a beast who stalks from up above,
And pounds it’s fist, it’s force into the land,
It moves so swiftly through, takes what it wants,
With all it’s might, a last long look,

Then it’s gone as quick as it appeared,
Without a second thought revealed,
It’s deeds and tales recorded for all time,
For those who’ve seen won’t easily forget

Just flashes of the whirlwind show
A Tornado’s born upon the earth.
