One of those "want to get away" embarrassing moments.
“Maybe this was too hard!”

My embarrassment was not eased by the concern in the teaching assistant’s voice.  How many people sprain their ankle while jogging in place?  Now, that’s talent.  Okay, just clumsiness (but sarcasm feels less painful).  To make matters worse, I was in college at the time.  Dang, I can’t even claim being a child and just learning how to run.  Instead, I was almost old enough to be considered an adult.

This memorable incident occurred in a class designed to show future elementary teachers how to conduct a physical education session.  That might be bad, except that the class was nicknamed “Brownies and Fairies” (due to its relative ease).  I hear that snickering.

There I was running in place one moment then falling to the ground the next.  Spraining an ankle is painful enough without the accompanied humiliation of doing so in such a silly and ridiculous manner.  To quote a popular airline commercial, “Want to get away?”   Well I guess that if I’m going to do something, I should  do it with style and panache.  (Hey, I’m working to save face here!)

Before I could begin to figure out a “face saving” and dignified way to cover up my folly (and now bruised ego), the teaching assistant stopped the class and came running over to help me.  Her concern was truly appreciated, but did we have to let EVERYONE know?  I mean, someone may have missed it.  Okay, not likely, but hope truly does spring eternal.  (Is that snickering turning into outright laughter?)

Perhaps I could have still saved the situation, when the TA voiced those now immortal words, “Maybe this was too hard!”  Imagine that, perhaps running in place is too hard.  Gee, thanks.  That’s great!  Thanks a bunch!

I feel really good now.  I should be a real hit on the playground.  Okay kids, follow me.  Here’s how NOT to do it!  Perhaps I should stay away from “follow the leader” type of activities.  Of course, there is always “Mother May I” (minus any demonstrations).

Oh well, at least I have a claim to fame!  Anyone want to trade?  Please?
