A poem about a man waiting in the woods on a snowy day.
WAITING IN THE WOODS

I wait in the shadow of the lurking woods
Surrounded by forest
I think of my woulds and my shoulds

I think of the way this scene was formed
How the lake has frozen
How the sky has stormed

I take it all in,the trees and the sky and the snow
Over there tracks of rabbit and deeper in the shadow
Tracks of doe

I go over my troubles with thought and care
Soon my head is clear, my troubles gone
Lost in the winds of the winter air

My eyes lift and admire the falling flakes
Somehow I think of my good deeds
And forget my mistakes

I gaze at the trees
as their branches pile with snow
Wondering how long it took them to grow

Inside I am warm
Outside I am cold
Lost in a question of how long and how old

In this manner I sit on a long fallen tree
Like it was put there
Especially for me

I wonder where that rabbit has gone
And ponder the fate of the passing deer
I do so with imagination but an answer never seems clear

Not worried by time how early or late
I sit
And think
I wonder
And wait
