This is a poem I wrote after a fifth grader in my school was killed
Today was a sad day as I entered the school,
Vaguely aware of the meetings today.
My mind was filled with others things,
Stressed I put you in the back of my head.
The exams and the finals were too much for me,
And even after my rest I felt tired.

The nudging was to much for me my Lord,
The soft and gentle voice you gave saying 'Go'
I walked in with a support, a strong hold to look to
I walked in shameful that I was late.

The singing wasn't meant for a bodily form in that room,
But for memory and the angels that sang along.
The song was the best for her and you,
The song showed a piece of the song you let us have of her.
For you took her mid-verse and left us sad and trembling

The principle and his boss cried side by side and held the others.
The rock of Gibraltar, need to get us through our school year.
Seemed so frail and broken in the memory of her tune,
The one who set your rules before us and expect nothing less
Was stumbled and cracking in our eyes

The picture with the music so much, too much and too little
For the closure some of us needed,
The song is true down to the note,
But is this truly what it means to be held?

Held by the tears we've cried and the thoughts we've remembered in her honor?
The purple ribbons we wear today are a symbol of the love that was shown and the truth we bear.
The hope we shed by each tear is another verse of her song
For now each of us is a tiny fragment
What’s left of her poem.
Left to carry her verse to our grave.
Left to sing her love for her God and her friends
For each of our life.

This is truly what it means to be held,
What the feeling is to love one another
To learn for one third grader
The love for Christ that we should all have,
The love of a child is what we learned today.
