What Will Be a Reoccurring Dream in Later Life


me and sarah
saw the dead dog,
it’s blood on the highway
with vacant eyes silently
cutting through us and
flies covering it’s body

sitting
on the side of the road
in the wet grass
watching the cars
slowly drive by
like a funeral procession

all we had known
of death were phone calls
about distant relatives,
and roadrunner cartoons,

we glance at the dearly departed
then look at each other
lost
in our wordless conversation

sharing our secret
of the stillness
of life leaving
the body
