When the sun shines it hurts my eyes, my mother makes me wear sunglasses for fear of furrows developing in "my child's youthful skin" she constantly reminded me.

I hated them!

When everyone else dressed in shorts and tee's, you would find me long-sleeved and legs covered no matter how hot out. Where I live, it is always hot. I didn't think this odd.

What was odd, was my fascination for foraging the back woods to find...dead things.

I had a collection in the old shed out back that no-one knew about, jars full of beetles, moles, bees a lot of bees, a skunk flat as a pancake laid out nicely as a little rug! All dead as a doornail.Out of every thing dead I collected, my very favorite was a big patch of long hair still connected to the scalp!

While my little sister played with Barbie dolls, I could be found combing my patch of hair, I called it "my little baby". I braided it, put it in pony's with ribbons. Sometimes I would take the time to put in pin curls. Those nights; I couldn't wait for the next morning to run take out the pin curls to see the beautiful ringlets cascading down my little baby!

Once, I found a coyote that had just died, and dragged his heavy bloated body home. It must have taken 10 hours or so it seemed, dragging and pulling him all the way across the wheat field.I was so excited to show my mom and dad what I had found! I didn't care about keeping this a secret it was to cool to keep it all to myself.

I could see my mom standing on the porch watching me so I pulled faster and harder to get to her. "Hey mom, look!" I said, beaming with pride.

I did not expect the slap on the face that came from my mom. "Deidre get that dead thing out of here. I'ts probably filled with maggots, take it back to where you found it!" She sounded scared.

The fear in my mothers eyes scared me. I never saw my mother afraid of anything or anyone. I obeyed to ease her suffering.

I made the trek back. I was bone tired, I placed my coyote gentle down. I was about to sit and rest, when I saw a very strange looking lady standing right in front of me. Where did she come from?

She was all wrinkled up. She had long Grey hair running all the way down her back to her bottom. She wore a shawl that covered her arms and a skirt to her ankles. She had on necklaces of leather and shinny beads. Her wrist were covered with bracelets. She was ancient!

"Come my dear, I have been expecting you. I have a special gift for a special little girl."

She turned towards the Stand of Oaks and started walking. For being so old she walked at a fast pace.Curious about my gift, I followed nearly running. We went on for a very long time deeper into the stand. My legs hurt. We slowed to a stop.

"Do you know who I am?"

I was going to say "no". Something stopped me, a vague shadow of a memory tucked in the recesses of my mind came forward. "Are you my aunt, the Crazy one? "

"Everyone is entitled to there opinion, yes?"

She led on, where an immense old oak tree stood! "This is the place, but you must scrunch down like a dead little dehydrated rabbit can you do that?"

"Of course I can watch!" I wilted and squished myself into a tiny little beetle. "See!"

Aunt Crazy was talking, I did not understand the words she was saying but it wasn't for me to hear, it seems aunt Crazy was talking to the tree! "The tree says you may enter dear, just watch for his exposed roots they are tender."

I looked down at the old oaks huge gnarled roots. "I'll be careful. Does the tree talk to you?"

"My child, it will not be long until you understand his hum. When you crossed over the wheat field you entered into a different place!" I did not understand aunt Crazy's ramblings nor did I dare interrupt her. I had the feeling that my aunt could be mean, real mean!

"Look at Cyrus here, he is older than those mountains yonder and wiser still"

I followed in my aunts exact footsteps, wondering to myself what I was doing her, and why I was not afraid? Posturing just so I wiggled my way into Cyrus's interior.

"Wow, this is as big as my"... my shed, I thought to myself. My shed was a secret, my collection of dead things were mine, no one else's.

As if aunt crazy was reading my mind she piped up, "Child remember where it is you go each time to find one of your treasures." This was not a question it was a statement!

I was thinking about what aunt Crazy had just said. "Where did I find that skunk? Oh Yeah, across the wheat field, my little puppy too!"

Every dead thing I had collected had always been found across the wheat field. I was surprised I had never noticed this before.

"You and I are much a like. Just take a look around my home, you will understand." Cyrus's interior was large, the wood was polished to a sheen. There were natural pockets everywhere! Each pocket held dozens of jars, bottles and clear containers. Each filled with dead things!

Aunt Crazy observed, carefully. She watched Deidre smile! Sheer delight arose from the woman, the room grew brighter for just an instant.

She watched Deidre's nose nearly touched the first bottle, inspecting it as if she were a private investigator! Inside the bottle the cutest newborn kitten, perfectly preserved with his little pink tongue slightly peeking out from his mouth.

She watched as Deidre continued on inspecting, a bottle with strange looking spiders piled to the hilt, filled the next jar.

Deidre saw tiny containers with beetles, shiny huge black ones, iridescent beetles and some she herself had never collected. Dead mice, moles, snakes and a owl stood on a perch so lifelike she had to take a second look!

She watched Deidre, lost in fascination, musing over each and every specimen until she came to the last shelf!

Unlike the others this crevice was barren except for one object. It was covered with a shear cloth. it was not a dead thing!

""You are a special little girl!" suddenly my aunts long bony tendrils came from behind grabbing my shoulders! she whispered in my ear. "Yes, very special."

A ripple of fear ran throughout my body, chilling and cold. "Please, let go of me!" I wriggled and twisted away from my aunt's grasp!.

I was filled with fear and awe. I wanted to run away, get away from this place. I did not run, instead I asked, "What is that?" I pointed my finger straight towards cloth covered item. I waited for her answer, but nothing was said, I watched my aunt as she peered into my eyes.

Aunt Crazy spoke; her once lulling voice was now replaced with an eerie creepy voice. The voice of a witch! "That little one, has been waiting ages for you! That is why you are here!"

It took awhile for my eyes and ears to adjust to the dim of Cyrus's interior. I thought I heard something, words I think. I could barely make them out, "It is time." It could just as well have been a hum. I quickly dismissed the thought. My focus was on that shelf.

I felt drawn toward the object! I walked slowly toward the shelf, my hands reached towards what lie beneath the shear cloth. I was so scared but I could not stop myself!

My head felt like thick fog. The next thing I knew I had my hands on the cloth and was slowly pulling it off, to stare straight at "a doll ? " I wasn't sure at first, at closer inspection I found that it was a very old doll.

The doll was in a sitting position. It was hairless with beige skin, bare naked, and where its eyes should have been- were two deep gaping sockets! A large red smile was stitched with embroidery thread. This was no dead thing!

Aunt crazy came up to me, she was screaming at me hysterically. "The wind is coming and the moon will be rising, take her, you must go." "Go NOW- Keep her in your...your secret place!" With that she shoved me down towards Cyrus's exit hole.

"It is time" came the hum.

This time I knew the words came from Cyrus, he sounded as crazy as my aunt. The exit seemed smaller. I shrunk down, wiggled-wormed my way, and flew out of that the hole!

Outside the wind was blowing. The air smelled odd].

With the doll in the crook of my arm, I began to run as fast as rabbit. I could just make out aunt Crazy's voice..."Remember, watch out for Cyrus's exposed roots, they are tender."

I was far beyond his tender roots and my aunt, she was crazy. The setting sun, hurt my eyes.
