Hunched up in a corner....
Winner Tammy's Poetry's Prism~Weekly Contest Week 128

Misused

Hunched up in a corner against the cold wall,
suffocated by teardrops that refuse to fall.
Head clasped tightly in hands to block out the night.
Just praying that day will make everything right.

My heart may be broken and my body wracked
with pain from the blows, but my spirit's intact.
This wasn't the promise we made before God.
You vowed you would cherish not rule with a rod.

It's not easy to speak, to let the world know
that all of our marriage has just been a show.
'I'll escape from this prison you've made for me'
Voice it enough times and it may come to be.

The number of times that I've had to explain,
'I tripped and I fell as I ran in the rain'
And then the black eye? 'It was the cupboard door'
Not where you hit me as I lay on the floor.

I've got to break free from this cycle of shame.
Something inside of me says I'm not to blame.
I've spent too many years just living this lie.
Does it have to go on while life passes by?

One day, just when you think that you've got me beat
I'll confound you by standing on my two feet.
I'll be my own person.  I know that I am
a much better woman than you are a man.
