Dance For Me

Is it dangerous the way we stand so close,
The way our mouths move, our lips kiss the air.
Ten more minutes and I will sink to the bottom,
Crying for what hovers above me,
The light, and you.

There was a time that I heard you laughing.
You were watching a boy of three dance and scream.
His eyes were your eyes and you both laughed in rhythm.
How blue you and the sky were, and I waited
For you and for love.

Two more drinks and I will be drunk.
I will sing to you from this low place in the mud.
And will you dance for me, dance like you did
When youth was your friend and God was watching
From His chair?

In a moment the rain will begin.
I can smell it waiting in the breeze and in your hair.
One dance I beg of you.  One dance and then no more.
I will sing now while you dance.  We will laugh,
And while laughing we will leave.
