What happens when you're too shy to speak up?
Shy - But Not Dry

It was story time in my kindergarten classroom and all the kids sat on the rug to listen to Miss Grant read a story. Miss Grant had a rule that we were not allowed to interrupt her or the class during story time. I was a very shy and quiet kid and I was not one to break the rules – ever. Well during today’s story, I had to pee really badly but I was too shy to raise my hand and let the class know that I had to go. So I just sat quietly and tried to hold it. I began fidgeting as I sat on the rug waiting for the story to end. I couldn’t hold it any longer. Then it happened – I peed my pants. Well actually I was wearing a dress and tights. I never said anything and I just hoped that nobody noticed. When story time was over, everyone went back to their seats at the table. I was the last one to stand up so no one would notice the wet spot I left on the rug. I finished the morning wearing my wet tights and never told anyone my little secret.

When I got home from school, I immediately took off my wet clothes and threw them in the hamper thinking “thank goodness no one noticed”. Later that night, my mom told me a bedtime story which she usually did every night. The story she told was about a little girl in kindergarten who accidentally wet her pants in the classroom because she was too shy to let the teacher know she had to go to the bathroom. When the story was over, I looked at my mom in amazement. I had to tell her – I couldn’t keep my secret any longer. “That is exactly what happened to me today!” I exclaimed.

Mom wasn’t mad at me and she didn’t make me feel bad for what I did. She just told me never to be embarrassed about having to go to the bathroom. “Everyone goes to the bathroom -- it’s a normal thing. It’s way more embarrassing to wet your pants.”

I’m still not sure why my mom chose to tell that bedtime story on that night – could it be she knew all along about my little secret?
