When emotions boil over with the simple passage of time.
She was sweet, like the cantaloupe I cut.
“Thanks, Mom, you’re the best!” she declared,
Took a piece, and was then off with a strut.

I stood by the window, washed the juices from my hands
Then she came into view, arms swinging without reservation,
And slipped off to the woods like water through sands.

My chest then constricted, pushing tears from within.
Everything was fine, yet there I stood crying
While observing my kin.

Where had they come from, these tears with no warning?
Her childhood was slipping away with each second,
It was the loss of childhood I was mourning.

Hold onto it love, live in delight for as long as you can.
She must have sensed my dilemma, for she then turned,
Smiled, and waved her small hand.

Still with tears, my heart leapt. I waved and a smile back I then sent.
Thanks, Bri, you always know just what I need.
She turned back toward the woods with a skip,
And around the bush she went.
