girl runs into woods and spots something unnatural
(i dont really how i wrote a lot of this. it seems off.)

                                              FOREST NIGHTS

The more I run, the more I hear footsteps. I can’t tell whether they are my own or of the person chasing me. He is trying to kill me! The thought kept playing over in my head. I can’t bear the thought of dying, not now. Not after finding such a great life.

I pushed the thought away, telling myself to concentrate. Concentrate on finding a place to hide, concentrate on running. I am in the woods. I should be able to find somewhere to hide, but I can’t. I scanned the woods some more, stopping for just a minute to catch my breath, behind a large tree. My foot slipped into a small hole in the ground.

Looking down I saw that next to the small hole there was yet another hole. But this one was not small, it was medium, just big enough for a person my size to fit, inside the tree. I slipped inside. The sound of running footsteps stopped suddenly in front of the tree.

“Where are you? I know you’re around here somewhere, and I’ll find you. Don’t doubt for a second that I will find you, bitch.” The man who was chasing me yelled. My heart was pounding, and I was holding my breath. The man paused, still looking around. Leave, just leave me alone!!! To my surprise, he did. As soon as he was far enough away, I started to breath again.

That didn’t last too long though. Hot breath touched the back of my neck. Slowly turning I saw glowing eyes, green glowing eyes. A scream escaped my throat. The body attached to the eyes also screamed. Why is this thing with glowing eyes screaming, and because of me? The thought came to me instantly, and I stopped screaming.

Still confused, I asked “What are you and why are you screaming?”

“I am screaming because you are screaming. Why are you screaming?” the creature asked.

“Because-because your eyes, they are glowing!” I replied. This is very strange. There wasn’t enough light for me to make out its face.

“Is it strange to have glowing eyes? Why are yours not glowing you-you creature?” it questioned.

“Glowing eyes aren’t normal. I don’t have glowing eyes because I’m human. Something you clearly are not.”

The creature seemed upset at this. It didn’t reply so I added “Let’s go outside, so I can see you…” We crawled outside and I got a good look at him. His eyes were green. They weren’t a light green, but they weren’t dark either. At the time, they also weren’t glowing.

Another thing I immediately realized was that he looked completely human. Of course he’s human, just wearing contacts.

“So you are just human…” I told him. He looked puzzled for a moment.

“Human? What is human?” he asked, confusion showing on his face. “I don’t not think I have ever heard of such a creature…” he added.

I tried to think of an answer. I was baffled that he didn’t know what a human was. He looked like one, so I assumed he was one. I guess I was wrong but I still couldn’t form the thought about how to explain what a human was.

“A human is a mammal that walks on two legs and has opposable thumbs” I offered. But the words didn’t seem right.

“I walk on two legs and have opposable thumbs yet I am not this human mammal that you speak of.” He sounded offended and I wondered why.

I thought I should ask some questions about him before he got mad and did something to me.

“Well, what are you exactly?” I inquired. How does someone not know what a human is? Weird.

“I am a wood nymph,” he told me like I was a complete moron.

“Ok then. If you want to believe that…” because I was not believing this. He obviously had some mental problems.

“I am telling you the truth, why would I lie?” this was a good question. Why would somebody lie to a complete stranger?

“I don’t know. Because you’re crazy?” I told the supposed wood nymph.

“I am not crazy! I am a wood nymph, my name is John. I live in that tree. The one you so rudely barged in on. There I was, just minding my own business, and you came into my home and started screaming at me. And yet you call me crazy?” stated the nymph.

“You live in that tree?” I asked, curious.

“Of course I live in that tree. Where else do you expect me to live? Under that rock?” John asked, pointing to a large rock a few feet away. I couldn’t help myself, I started laughing. He was just being so serious about living in a tree. And the look on his face was priceless. After a minute I got a hold of myself, John looked angry.

“Sorry,” I muttered. “Look, can you help me find my way out of this place?” I asked.

“Why would I help you? And who was that man chasing you? Why did he want to kill you?” inquired John. I don’t know why, but I found that I could trust him.

“Because you’re nice? And he was chasing me because I ran away from him because he was trying to kill me because I have something he wants.” I explained.

“What is so important that someone would kill you for?” he asked.

“A ring that my grandmother gave me,” he seemed to accept that as all I was going to tell him because he started to lead me from the direction I came from. After a few minutes he asked me what my name was. I wasn’t sure if I should tell him, I didn’t even know if he was leading my in the right direction. So far though, he has been nice. I sighed and told him my name.

“Amber.” I wasn’t about to tell him my last name. I still didn’t entirely believe that he was a wood nymph. He didn’t ask me either. In fact, that was all he said. I hadn’t realized how far I had run. We walked for about an hour before I could see the sun shining through the trees.

“Thank you John, I can make it out from here.” I told him. He simply nodded then turned around and began walking back.
