The night air was heavy rain from the approaching storm. Lightning lit up the Chicago skyline, casting eerie shadows in all directions. Most people with any sense had fled the streets in search shelter. On the lower east side, near the docks, one building stood out among the rest. Owned by Anthony Ghiardelli, it was the headquarters for one of Chicago's most feared crime bosses. Ghiardelli had risen to power on the east coast in New Jersey and New york before making his was to Chicago. By judiscious killing of many of the other crime families in Chicago, Ghiardelli quickly set himself up as the crime boss and established his reputation as a ruthless and dangerous man.
