It is a poem about the how fickle and hurtful our society can be at times.
I AM

by Jodi Stephenson - 12-8-07

I am hated and abused, a tortured, lifeless soul
Walking among the living, who do not even know
I hide my tears and conceal my pain, like everyone is taught
I laugh out loud at those who scorn me, hiding everything I am not

The world has asked me numerous times to kindly crawl off and die
Through neglect, abandonment and rejection, I have learned to not ask why
I possess too much of one characteristic and not enough of another
Not worthy of a second glance, not ever worth the bother
It only takes one inappropriate display of emotion to bring total alienation
The consequences of which will surely drown out my words of self-righteous indignation

For the people in this world, their only wish is to be entertained.
If I indulge them with such pleasure then I will be accepted, if not I will be shamed.
I cannot change who I am anymore than the sun can cease to rise
Shining its rays on my life’s mistakes
Reflected through my weary brown eyes

So to those who hold the shovels, and try to dig my grave,
I wouldn’t count me dead just yet,  for I am strong, proud and brave,
I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and can stand while others fall
For I know my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the greatest I AM of all.
