"Grocery Isle Fate"

In between the produce and the bread, I met a girl who turned my head.
“At least I think it’s a girl,” I said,
Trying not to stare, to look straight ahead.

Her hair was spinach green with streaks of tomato red
I turned away trying not to stare, to look straight ahead.
“Excuse me Ma’am, is this yours?” Her voice was flat as pita bread.

Her hand reached out to give me my purse and that’s when I experienced the worst.
Her voice as flat as pita bread did not prepare me what I saw first,
The twelve celery fingers growing out from her palm filled me with such alarm I almost burst!

“Thanks so much,” I shakily stated, and looked at the creature my daughters had created.
“Gee Mom, isn’t she cool? Look what we learned in science at school!”
The fruit of my loins, the children I’d raised, had created a zombie from their vegetable gruel!
The girl who turned my head, in between the produce and the bread, spoke a kindly rule,
“You see, with twins, such things are fated.”
