Biscuit, a cat, gets stuck outside: how can she let her family know she wants to come in?
Biscuit Finds A Way In

Biscuit is a small orange cat. She has long fur, golden eyes, and a tiny pink nose. Biscuit loves to climb to the very top - the top of the fireplace mantle, the top of the bookcase, even the top of the very narrow shelves with what-nots on them.

Biscuit lives with two other cats in a brown house in the country. Her people - Mommy, Daddy, Daniel, and Rachel - let her go outside whenever she wants. But Biscuit had a problem - she didn’t know how to let her people know when she wanted to come back in.

Max, the big dark tabby cat, meows loudly when he wants in. Biscuit tried meowing when she wanted in, but her voice was to little for the people to hear. Sadie, the grey tabby, scratches on the door, but Biscuit couldn’t stand the way that made her claws feel.

So, day after day, Biscuit just waited until she heard the door open and ran as fast as she could to get inside the house. Sometimes she waited a very long time. Biscuit loved being outside . . . for a little while. She really wanted to find a way to let her people know when she was ready to go back in.

One day, as Biscuit waited for the door to open, she thought she saw a new way to get on top of the roof. She had been using the trees next to the house for a long time. Now she thought if she could get on the big metal box under the window, she might be able to make it onto the roof in one more big jump.

Getting on top of the box was easy, but when Biscuit looked up to the roof she saw it was very high . . . higher than she had first thought. But she loves getting to the very top of things and just had to try.

So she crouched very low, kept her eyes on the edge where she would grab with her front paws, gave a mighty shove with her back legs and . . . didn’t make it!

She put out her claws and grabbed the first thing she could: the screen on the window right next to Mommy’s spot on the couch.

“What on earth?” Mommy said, “It’s Biscuit! Look Rachel, Biscuit is on the screen. Daniel! Come here and look at Biscuit!” They all smiled and laughed and looked right at Biscuit hanging on the screen.

“She looks scared. Go see if you can help her get down,” Mommy told Rachel and Daniel. They rushed to the door and opened it, but before they could get to the window, Biscuit jumped down and ran in the house, as fast as she could.

Now when Biscuit wants to come in the house, she jumps onto the big metal box under the window and pulls herself up the screen to see if she can see in and her people can see her. Mommy keeps muttering something about the screen getting torn, but Biscuit doesn’t really care, because now her people know when she wants to come in.
