Poetry of doubt and defeat
Ah, man! you wonderful villain! you faithless divine!
You’ve always amazed me; your ruthless desires I took for a sign.
A sigh tears the night asunder; the hour is evil, it seems.
A call from beyond the abyss brings light on the horrible scenes.

Can flowers really grow from hate?
Can love still come or is it late?
If men so wish it, then it’s true:
Despair destroys the starry blue.
