Australia Day ~ January 26th ~ as I see it.
AUSTRALIA DAY ~ JANUARY 26th

Australian Flag

Beneath the Southern cross we stand,
Australia ~ Oz ~ The Great South land.
The First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay
Two twenty years ago today.

Australia Day ~ January, Twenty six,
A day when Aussies get their fix
Of barbies, beer and backyard sports
Like cricket, footie (and ogling sorts).

Flags fly high from vantage spots
Of poles and buildings and parking lots.
Dress of the day for young and old
Are national colours of green and gold.

We'll feast on good old Aussie lamb
And snags, rissoles, pineapple and ham.
A nice thick steak with barbeque sauce,
Washed down with a stubby of beer, of course.

And for dessert, lamingtons ~ a must,
So much pavlova, you think you'll bust.
Sao bikkies with tomato and cheese
Flo's Pumpkin scones are sure to please.

The favoured sport is backyard cricket.
The rubbish bin makes a pretty good wicket.
Every family has a "wannabe Don"
Who makes new rules as the game goes on.

On a serious note, we recognise
The ones who, in Australia's eyes
Have excelled themselves and done us proud
In their special field ~ have stood out from the crowd.

Australians of the year are named
For services and sport they're famed,
For being charitable or entertaining too,
These folk are honoured as real true blue.

We welcome newcomers with a flag unfurled,
From countries all around the world.
They have chosen to live in this land so great,
And become a dinkum Aussie mate.

So on the twenty sixth of Jan.
Celebrate with us as best you can.
Get to know your neighbour as a friend
And above all else "avagudweegend".

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!!!

To explain a little of the Aussie slang...

'ogling sorts'-----watching the girls
'rissoles'-----------large savoury meatballs
'stubby'-------------small bottle of beer (though in Darwin, Northern Territory, a stubby is much, much larger!)
'Sao bikkies'-------a square cracker biscuit
'wannabe Don'-----every aspiring young cricketer wants to emulate the famous Aussie cricketer, the late, great Sir Donald Bradman.
'dinkum'---------true, sincere
'avagudweegend'-------Have a good weekend
'Flo's Pumpkin scones------- Lady Flo Bjelkie-Petersen (wife of the late Sir Joh, who was Premier of the State of Queensland 1968-1987), She is renowned for her Pumpkin Scones which are a favourite and popular tea time treat. The recipe is available by Googling "Pumpkin Scones" .

Anything else which needs an explanation, do not hesitate to ask.

Cheers Meg.
