A military wife's worst nightmare.
My eyes filled with tears
As we kissed goodbye
He looked so handsome in his uniform
My heart swelled with pride
As he took one last look back
Knowing he would be protecting us
Serving his country
And defending all that he loved
***
The bombs went of
A series of explosions rattling the ground
Screams filled his ears
The noise was all around
He was thrown from his feet
A bright light filled his eyes
The noise quieted
Until it died
***
The doorbell rang
Sending the dog into alarm
I opened the door and pushed him back
Balancing the baby girl in my arms
A stranger in uniform stood before me
A heavy message on his tongue
But my grief made me stop listening
Before his words were done
***
Gentle hands shook my shoulders
My eyes fluttered open in the night
My sobs made my body shudder
But soft breathing let me know all was right
He held tightly to me
And kisses caressed my cheek
He was still with me
It was all a dream
