The affect of war on families is shown through the eyes of a young child.
         I miss my Daddy. ‘E went away a long time ago. My Daddy pwomised me that’e’d love me fo’ evah an’ ‘e said ‘e would nevah twuly leave me. Mommy said Daddy went to punish da bad guys that twied to huwt Amewicans. A few days ago Mommy got a letta. She looked at it a while and then she stahted cwyin’. Mommy said Daddy might not come ‘ome. I told Mommy ‘e had to come ‘ome cuz ‘e said ‘e would nevah leave me. Mommy cwied s’mowah and ‘ugged me so ‘ard I couldn’t ‘ardly bweathe. Othah big people came ovah an’dey all cwied. I didn’t undastand what was ‘appenin’, so I cwied too. The big people bounced me up an’ down and gave me candy, but I didn’ eat it. I wanted someone to tell me why everyone was cwyin’. I waited for Daddy for a long time, but Mommy made me go to bed befo’ he came. When I woke up Daddy still wasn’ thewe. I asked Mommy what the letta said, and she said Daddy was lost. I wanted to go look for‘im, but Mommy wouldn’ let me. I told Mommy she was a meanie, and that Daddy was a meanie too cuz ‘e broke ‘is pwomise. Mommy started cwyin’ again and said that Daddy wanted to come back but ‘e couldn’ and ‘e never would again. Then I cwied cuz Mommy was cwyin’ and cuz Daddy was gone. Now I think Mommy’s wight. My Daddy will never come ‘ome to me an’ Mommy again. I miss my Daddy.
