Dark free verse. The world seen through the eyes of a shut-in. Inspired by someone I know.
The world out there
Such a scary place
Don't let it in
I carefully watch
Through the slits in my shutters
Look at the TV
Another murder
Mother always said
"Put yourself out there
And that's bound to happen."
They won't get me
Lock all my doors
They knock
Don't answer
Music on my radio
All those fools
With their sad songs
Their broken hearts
I pity them
Put yourself out there
And that's bound to happen
Let someone get too close
And they have power over me
Allow myself to care
And I'm naked
For all the world to see
They'll laugh at me
My pasty skin
My imperfections
Even worse
If they accept me
If they like me
If they
Love me
Then they have me
Naked
On a leash
My happiness
At their mercy
They can hold it up high
Out of reach
Make me beg
Do tricks
And then turn away
Laughing
Leaving me
Wanting
Needing
Put yourself out there
And that's bound to happen
Or they could stay by my side
For years
Loving me
Making me happy
Then they could die
Like Mother
Leaving me
Wanting
Needing
They won't get me
Never look at their eyes
They might see who I am
Check the lock on the door
Again
Don't let anyone in
If I don't make friends
They can't turn into enemies
The TV can't call me names
I can turn off the radio
Whenever I want
I can see enough of the world
Watching
Through the slits in my shutters
If I turn off my lights
I can see the world go by
Safe
Alone
They won't even know
I'm here.
