A Tale of Old Love

It was a warm summer night when Mr. Pantry decided to sit out on his front porch. It was one of those porches that was screened in. He had two rocking chairs; one for him and one for his wife.

He and his wife would sit on those two chairs for hours on end sipping on coffee and talking about nothing and everything. However, in this moment it was different. The room seemed emptier, quieter, and slightly colder. He new that his life would be different from here on out. He had just recently returned home from his wife's funeral. She had passed in the early hours of the morning.

They had lived a long happy life together. They fought, they laughed, they raised two beautiful children. He remembered many of the conversations that they had on this porch. One conversation would change his life forever. This is how he new that he would spend the rest of his life with her.

"Darling she said," As she was knitting her scarf.
"Yes dear," he replied as he sipped on his coffee in his favorite mug.
" Do you know that you've changed my life?"
He looked over at her with a happy yet confused look.
"How's that?"
"You've made me a very happy woman. Before I met you I never would smile, or laugh, or have any fun of any kind. You, you opened me up to a whole new world. And for that I love you!"
"You love me huh." He sipped on his coffee.
"'You love me?' that's your response! I just poured out my heart to you and you say it back to me, like it meant nothing!
He stood up and turned to her. She appeared puzzled; she stopped her knitting in confusion. Mr. Pantry took her hand, pulled her up took her into his arms. They began to dance slowly, romantically. His head rested softly and gently on her cheek. He whispered in her ear, "I love you. I want you to always remember that. I would also love for you to be my wife."
They stopped dancing. She looked at him with the widest, happiest eyes. She smiled and kissed him on the cheek; hugged him and whispered in his ear, "Yes."
They continued to dance without words. They danced until the sun set.
He walked her home and they said their good-byes. That day he knew he would spend forever with her.

He continued to sip his coffee in his mug as he had done for years. He knew that today and forever would be different, but he would never foreget the love that he had for his wife. Something so sweet and so warm that kind of love is something that's hard to find. It was something that had changed his life forever.
