Something I wrote for my AP English class.
Leave the movies on display for everyone to see,
And hide the crumbs and dust under the vanity.
Let the half-empty perfume sit out on the dresser,
But behind the CD rack, hide the love letters.

Let’s leave the artist to his masterpieces,
And let’s leave the congregations to their priests;
Leave the middle-aged men to their corporate lives,
Leave the hopeless waiting ‘til that moment arrives.

We all have to belong somewhere.
Leave the girls at home doing their hair.
All of this must belong someplace.
Leave the astronauts in outer space.

But we don’t all have to stick like glue to where we “belong”
We are not as faceless as we think me might be; we’re wrong.

Just let go for a moment and lose your place because I know
That if you step back and look at the ebb and the flow
You’ll find that it’s not so important to find yourself as it is to do the opposite
Release and unhinge and unlock until you can really, really feel it

When we’re all so afraid of straying from the beaten path,
There’s no way we’ll be able to actually do the math:
You plus me plus what we love and what we see
Minus what we’re told and what we’re taught to believe.

It adds up. And we can stop kidding ourselves; we can live.
We can breathe. We can feel; we can give
Ourselves a second chance to do what we didn’t think we could
Maybe if everyone knew this, we always would.
