A contest entry for Pond Poetry, with a picture prompt.
A face, changing with the days.
A life, lived behind a painted smile.
Pretending in the realm of reality.
Playing to the expectations of the judges.
Staying behind the protective shield,
separated from everyone who could hurt or help.
Longing to leave the stage for the real world,
but too afraid to leave the familiar.
Alone and lonely, the smiling mask falls:
I am the masked actress.
