a thought about the journeys of life
I watched you walk
In your slow and careful way
Pain evident on your face
Concentrating
On each step

I walked in my usual fashion
As if there was no time
Or the world would stop
Without me getting there
On time

Our eyes met quickly
Yours with pride and dignity
And I could see that you thought
I had such contempt
For your progress

But you don’t know me
How I admired your courage
Your dignity and strength
Though you struggled
With each step

Propriety is a funny thing
I just wanted to take your hand
And say, “Well met sir..”
And I really wanted you
To know something

My heart walks with yours
And I see you, really see you
You are applauded and admired
By all that I am
This passing stranger.
