Persistance vs. Quality of Life. Based on a Chinese Proverb
Carving stone with water

Drip, drip, drip.
Never tiring of boredom,
the persistent ones measure
each drop
in an effort to prove
that dripping water
can carve a hole in a stone.

Sometimes I admire someone
who can close his mind
to all but one goal,
and persevere.  But then,
what happens once the hole is formed?
And if it takes a lifetime,
was it a life worth living?

As I hear the drip, drip, drip,
of those around me
still eagerly molding stone,
I am awed at the strength
of a mere drop of water,
and the dogged persistence of man
to pretend he is God.
