story of the mysterious orange box
The orange box sat innocently at my doorstep as i returned from work that morning. i looked casually around, just a glance to make sure that the sender wasnt still around. little kids played hopscotch on my street, oblivious of anything going on in my
world. i bent down to pick it but a quick sound interrupted me and i jumpd back up. my neighbour from across the street with a coffee cup in one hand and an over enthusiastic grin on her face entered my lawn and appraoched me with quick long steps. i stood in front of the orange box to hide it. i wasnt sure if she had anytihng to do with it but it seemed unlikely. "Sarah!!", i smiled weakly. "Hey hey heyyy ure never gona guess what happneed this morning!!". i kknew i didnt need to . she continued without losing a breath. "so i got up with a strange headache and feeling all fluey wondering what was wrong because i had slept properly and for well over 8 hours. i open my eyes and guess what was lying next to my pillow???" she looked as if she was gonna burst with happiness. i randomly pictured her exploding and flowers shooting out of her body. but again i kept quite. i had a feeling what was coming next. "A WHOLE BOUQUET OF FLOWERS!!! rosess, red ones! can u belive it??? i nearly screamed but then i stopped my self and fixed my hair. and in walks in...... ",she gave a dramatic pause... ,"sammys father!!!!!!!!" i managed to make a "no way" surprised face and that was apparently very appropriate because she screamed her high pitched scream!! "thats exactly what i thought!!.. anyway he comes over and kisses me and says i hope u can forgive me. im back for good.. and well what could i say, i just hugged him." and she sigheddd loudly.."well my life finally had its happy ending u know, my prince charming is back!!". i didnt point out that this sounded amazingly similar to the 5 other times he had left and then returned. but i had to give him some credit, this time he came with flowers. she waited earnestly to hear my reaction and i knew i couldnt fake my interest any longer.. "Errr soo urmm.. hey so what was the headache all about??" i finally managed to come up with something that didnt involve her mentioning how much she loved him and that he had stolen her heard the first time she laid eyes on him.. "Oh that.. well u know im allergic to roses dont u?" she answered as if it was the most common knowledge in the world. "ohh rightt.. i replied meaningfully. surprisingly she caught the sarcam in my voice and said "oh u know bill, hes such an airhead, he totally forgot about it. but it doesnt matter. i mean i got a few rashes but its ok. i really do love him u know. hes my prince!!!" she smiled with her brilliant teeth and her eyes dancing around happily and did a little dance of her own. then she gave me an excited little hug." ahh well i should go back..make my darling some breakfast!!" and she winked as if it was the most exciting job in the whole world. "i told you ill be happy one day!" she had told me no such thing. "byeeeeeeeeeee.. muahh", she gave me a flying kiss and lookin back over her shoulder, her brilliant white teeth showing with all their glory said "i wish some day u find someone who makes u as happy as my bill does!!" and she skipped a little on her way back. i shuddered at her last words and hoped to God that didnt come true.
i kept standing at the same spot after sarah had left, still lookin back as if waiting for some other distraction to show up. when nothing happened for some time. i turned back towards the door and llooked down at the little orange box, one hand on my hip. i wouldve picked it up but after being interrupted by sarah before i was kind of shook up. so i walked casually towards the gate and lookin cautiously into the lane, closed it quietly. so that if anyone did enter, i would have some warning. i walked back and picked up the orange box, walked over to the lawn and sat down crosslegged on the little brown rug that i kept next to a tree that grew in my garden. it was a bright morning, the sun was shining proudly. i was glad to get a little shade under the tree. a grey tabby cat purred loudly as he walked towards me. i patted him affectionately. as if waiting for this, he sniffed around me and settled into my lap without asking for permission. i chuckled at his bravery and made a mental note to give him some milk after i was done with this business.
