Waking up to music and little visitors For the Acrostic contest - January 09
HELLO SUNSHINE

How amazing is an
early beam of sunshine, a tendril of
light stretching between blinds? Watch as it
leaps across the carpet and rests
on my unusually still and tranquilly

sleeping son, unaware and
unsuspecting that I am watching him,
nestled in his pillow.  This handsome
son is my angel, wearing on his sandy crown, a
halo, well, perhaps only when asleep.  His glow is
incandescent, brimming with possibilities.  Walking
near his bed, I reach to brush a wisp of hair from his forehead.  Then
enlightenment fills me as I gaze at my little piece of eternity bathed in sunshine

PATTERNS:
The first letter of each line spells HELLO SUNSHINE.
The first word of each line reads this way:
How early light leaps on sleeping, unsuspecting, nestled son; halo incandescent, near enlightenment.

If this is a real form, I have no idea what its called.  Anyway, the title was spelled out down the page, then the above mentioned sentence was written to go with each line.  Only then was the rest of the poem built on these words.  Try it sometime-sort of strange but fun too, even from one who tends to stray from traditional poetry.

Robin,
If I forget to designate one of the two of these before you judge the Acrostic Contest, Use the one above.  Thanks

Author's note to reviewer:

Below was the original version.  I'm entering one in an acrostic contest. Which do you like best and why.  Be sure to note the citation/product plug at the bottom of the page (inspiration for the words "Hello Sunshine". ) Both poems are about my 3 yo son, Jack whose favorite song lately is "Hello Sunshine" by the musician/songwriter cited in the credits at the bottom of the page.

An acrostic with the words: SUNRISE: A NEW BEGINNING

Sleep slowly ending, I lie still
Underneath my toasty down blanket
Nestling my head in my pillow. Sensing a visitor, I
Roll over, and I am greeted by a little pair of green eyes
Intently staring at me from my
Side of the bed.  My three year old son
Exclaims quite loudly, “Hello Sunshine, shinin’ on me”

And doesn’t stop until the stanza is over. Then, he

Nestles himself right between his daddy and me.
Early mornings often begin that way at our house.
Waking up to music and the twinkling eyes of a child is a

Blessing I cherish.  And somehow, the knees and
Elbows poking and punching during dream filled sleep
Go unnoticed, well, perhaps lovingly ignored.  For who,
In their right minds, could wake the bearer of good tidings, this
New life filled with song and laughter, from his descent back into sleep
Next to those who fill him with love and security.  And who,
In their drive to conquer the day, wouldn’t smile at finding a child and his
Gackie, and all the other stuffed friends, crowding the bed at sunrise.

Notes and credits:

“Hello Sunshine, Shining on me” is the first line of a song by Roger Day
Titled “Hello Sunshine” (a musician/songwriter I knew from the college days who sings some terrific kid's and grown up’s music.) Here’s a link to Roger Day. Check him out-his music gets kids up and moving!
http://www.rogerday.com/music    Hello Sunshine is on his newest kid album, Dream Big.

Gackie is my younger son’s favorite stuffed animal (a monkey) but he has about four stuffed animals that he brings downstairs with him each morning and they all end up in our bed along with the 3 yo and the 7 yo.  It gets crowded of the morning, folks, but what joy they are (as long as they don't come down until after 6 a.m.)
