snow and silence.
sometimes the birds eat all
the scattered seeds beneath
the bare-limbed Bradford pear,
and grow fat, fat, fatter.

the dogs bark gruff
at this group, till the birds
scatter like so many seeds themselves.

esoteric,
yet carelessly tossed away
brought back up again,
like seeds in the frozen earth.
many lie unflourished.
