Written for a friend of my step mother's who is about to have a daughter.
Moonlight feedings

She will feed your soul
Each night, bottle in your hand,
The heavy weight of her
Will fill your arms like a hug.

She’ll look to you for guidance, someday,
She’ll push and pull your heart,
She’ll make you wonder
if you’re doing this right,
She’ll stomp and shout, slam a door or two,
But then, she’ll also say “I love you, mom”
And that’s all it will take

For your memories to visit once more
The moonlight feedings,
Each night, bottle in your hand
The heavy weight of her
Filling your arms like a hug.

But for now, and in those early days,
Of midnight feedings and cries in the night,
As you lift her from the crib,
Your eyelids as heavy as your child,
That moon will be there to light the way,

The same moon that will guide this child
When she wakes at midnight,
And her child feeds her soul
Each night, bottle in her hand,
The heavy weight of her child
Filling her arms like your hug.
