A cry and a sob,
The baby crawls carefully
Slowly, onto a stepping stone

A whine and a pout
The toddler waddles
Quickly, onto another stone

A laugh and a shout
The preteen leaps
Excitedly, onto the next stone

A glare and annoyance
The teenager races
Hurrying, toward the next stone

Slip! Crash!
The teen sinks into deep, scummy water
But their friend pulls them out

A cheer and a glass of wine
The 21 year old dashes
Eager, reaching for the next stone

A sigh and a groan,
The middle age parent trudges forward
Grimacing, stepping with hesitation

A creak of a cane,
The grandparent leans forward,
Bitterly, barely moving at all

Slip! Crash!
The elderly person has no foothold,
They fall staring at the stones behind them,
Knowing that their life has been fulfilled
