Sometimes we just can't leave even when there is nothing left to stay for.
As I lay in the rubble,
broken, bloodied and bruised,
I listen for signs of life,
but only silence reaches my ears.

There are no sirens,
no cries for help,
there is nothing
and no one.

A scream fills my head,
its my own,
my brain urges me to get up,
to fight and not let go

But I remain where I am,
and begin to fade away,
I am cold, alone,
far away.

My breath slows,
the world darkens,
I feel no pain,
my body is lifeless.

My soul yearns to leave,
this broken place behind,
but I cannot go,
this is all I know.

I wrote this shortly after 9/11 and was in a way my tribute to those who lost their lives in that horrible tragedy and those who lost ones they loved.
