A brief insight of the emotion and stress of public service.
Protect and Serve  Revised 05-06-2009

Just imagine yourself running to help another person who is in trouble, a person who you do not know, have never met, and is not a friend or family member. Having to drop what you are doing and race to the place where there is a problem. Imagine doing all of this because it is your duty, your job, and your oath to protect the innocent. Imagine yourself as a police officer required to protect and serve.

Once they step into the realm of the unknown, as the chosen protector, they face overwhelming responsibility. They have the ability to take your freedom or life. They have incredible powers invested in them by the constitution of this great country. They are required to make split second decisions without making the slightest error. Still they move forward, issuing swift and needed justice. They are always willing to respond, where called, without hesitation. They are always willing to dive into whatever lies behind the dark curtain of uncertainty.

Once the devil's children become accountable for their devilish deeds, they may rest for only a moment until innocent ears capture the next cry for help. They're labeled as guardians to those who cannot fend for themselves, brothers to men who need a shoulder to lean against, and counselors to those who have no one to listen. The homeless call them friends, children call them hero, and those in need of prayer call them clergy. They do all of this while attempting to deal with their own problems in life and when it’s all finished, they must get ready to do it all again.

This is the life a Police Officer endures, always expected to give it all and expect nothing in return. They risk life and limb so others may have a serious chance at life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. There asked to face danger and walk away from nothing. Nevertheless, in the end he is only a person who has the desire to give others a chance to have peace, a child a voice, a victim some needed justice and a criminal his just punishment. He is a person, brother, friend, counselor, clergy, psychologist, and a hero.

How many hats can one person handle? How many times will he face danger and win the battle? How many heroes shall fall fighting for your freedom? To the soldier, officer, firefighter, and medical personnel it does not matter. They have taken an oath to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic. They know someday they too will be standing at the gates of Heaven basking in the glory. This is their mission, their desire, their dream, and the life that they have chosen. Thank God for giving you life and thank a soldier for keeping your life free.
