Dragon Creation

"A wise old owl lived in an oak tree, the more he spoke the less he heard, the less he spoke the more he heard, was he not a wise old bird?" ~ Unknown

Once in the beginning of time there was nothing. Something the mind cannot comprehend. There was only the Dragon God Fernis and goddess Kirra who lived within it’s blankness.

They had only each other to keep each other company. They were both mates to one another. But Kirra was sick of just her mate for company and his hard heart. Along with Fernis, Within her mind was set everything that is and what is to be. Though Fernis refused to make anything of it. For evil might have a chance within their knowledge. For the forces of Good and Evil were their from the beginning. Though Evil had never taken a shape.

Finally, Kirra decided to rebel against his mate and a great burst of fire-the entity that shapes all elements. Carefully she carved it out all around her and below her, she flew for days in a great circle. Until that nothingness was filled with cold flat something beneath their claws that was neither stone nor wood.

Fernid grew angry at his mate. He growled at her, telling her to stop. But this powerful growl only made this cold land quiver. It rose up. Into rolling hills, wide valleys and deep gorges.

Fernis blue eyes widened with astonishment and Kirra liked the idea of blue above. So she took that colour and commanded it be above that ’land’ It was so. Then, she came down upon that substance and with her horns and claws. Plucked a little bit of land into branching pillars, forming trees. Then she gathered up larger amounts and carved it up, higher than the hills, higher, higher. Fernis could not stop her, only warn her. For she was a god also.

He also knew that evil would have it’s chance in this creation. He was the serious, hard-to-please one. While Kirra had more the kind heart than her mate.

A trickle of agitated smoke rose from his nostrils, delighted. Kirra caught his white smoke and spread it all around the blue sky. Forming clouds above. Fernis still couldn’t appreciate it. He lowered his eyes and horizon appeared. Then, hoping to do something about it, he sprang down onto the earth and joined his mate.

His claws dug onto the earth and scratched the surface. Creating deep beds that were later to be lakes, rivers and seas. Kirra saw him, but she thought that her mate was joining her. Her delighted eyes and dragonish smile melted his heart and he no longer wished to harm her feelings.

But rather to impress her, he roared out to the clouds. Like a noble battle cry and the clouds quivered, then, they started to gush down waters. It caught mainly where he left his marks and they filled up with water. Then he flapped his wings and a cool breeze blew around the whole land. Kirra felt it very pleasant. So every time Fernis flapped his wings. That was a cool breeze blowing around you.

But the colour was still dull and black, the gods knew everything. Even before it had being created. Kirra knew what to do, she reared and struck the ground. Colour leaked around her claws and Fernis did the same. Colour leaked around them and covered the dullness with greenery, spreading grass and vegetation. As the rain continued to patter down. Flowers and other small colourful plants sprang up. Mountains and cliffs were covered with their colours and trees with theirs. Everything looked beautiful and right.

Kirra and Fernis were satisfied with their creation. For days they romped and played with one other. But soon they still wanted something or someone to share their land with. Fernis plucked a scale from his body and Kirra from hers. They combined them together and formed it as their image. Breathing life into it, They named him Drake. The first Dragon onto the land.

Then they continued to make more of their kind. Then they created more magical creatures from their scales. From them came centaurs, gryphons, fawns and all other magical creatures. But from the earth they formed deer, sheep and other non-magical creatures. They breathed life onto all of them.

When it was done, they spoke.

‘Respect the land we have made for you, care for it and multiply in numbers, also respect the non-magical creatures, for without them, you would not prosper’

The magical creatures agreed to this.

Drake, the first Dragon, was loved by Fernis as a son. He gave him a hide as tough as gems and claws as strong as stone. He also gave him the power to create and to be a good shepherd over all the creatures. But evil saw the chance within Drake and entered him.

Drake soon saw that the Dragons and all magical creatures of the Mountains of Tiri had to obey the Gods like puppets and did not respect choice that the Gods disliked.

For suns he resided within the Tirian Mountains and started creating oddly deformed shapes from the earth. Kirra came down to earth as a normal she-dragon and realised that evil had come onto the first Dragon. Just as Drake was about to breathe life into his creation Kirra put a bit of her spirit within them as well. Breathing life in it. The strange thing stood up on two legs. It was a human.

When Fernis heard of Drakes creation, he approved. Knowing of his gift to Drake.

But the humans, who were weak and had no claws, fangs, or strong legs to help them survive. Had to rely on other things, they showed no respect to Kirra and Fernises creation, only to themselves. They ripped down trees and built villages, they harvested the rock from the mountains. Fernis was surprised that a creature so weak could be so cunning. But his surprise turned to fury when one sun a villager killed an adult gryphon and brought it down to the village. The Humans rejoiced. It’s fur and feathers were enough to warm the entire village from the cold nights.

Fernis had had enough, he summoned Drake to a meeting with his mate Kirra and asked him why he had made them so close to the Dragons despite being pitied above all the rest

‘What have you done?’ snarled Fernis. ’Why have you done this?’

But Drake only spat in their faces and replied.

‘When I made humans Fernis, I made them so they could choose for themselves, what kind of peace will you have if no one chooses for themselves?’

Fernis looked at him with a blazing eye.

‘Very well then Drake, I will make it so all magical and non-magical creatures can choose for themselves’

Then Fernis reared and struck him. Banishing him to the darkest of the caves deep in the mountains. Yet nothing could change the anger and fear Drake had set onto the land.

Kirra was heartbroken. She and her mate bickered furiously in the stars that night and thunder and lightning clashed down. All the creatures fled, terrified, that they seen nothing like it before. Kirra loved her creation man, but Fernis told her furiously that if the humans are not destroyed they will destroy everything with their own confusion and evil. Kirra argued back that it was Fernis who created Drake in the first place. Then they left it at that, and the night quieted down.

As Fernis slept in the stars that night. Kirra came down as a she-dragon one more time. Quietly she summoned all the Dragons across Tiri and held a meeting atop the mountains. She asked all her children if they could watch over man, hunt for them and be guardians over them in their confusion. But she also made a promise to them that she would return a third time to reward those heavily who have kept their bond after a period of evil had passed. The Dragons agreed upon this friendship with the humans.

But weep for it could not last….
