My uncle Lloyd succumbed to cancer a week ago. This was written in his memory.
Last night I stood
trying to count the stars
marveling at their brilliance
the vastness of the heavens
One stood out for its radiance
its beams seemed to radiate
That star in all its majesty
captured and held my gaze
Smiling down as I was watching
and winked a friendly eye
And then as quickly as it had been seen
I watched it fall from the sky
I held out my hand as far as possible
Knowing I could never grasp it
I looked up then and in its place
was a mist of light
marking the place where the star shone down
And it was then I made a wish
that, as that star cannot be held, you cannot return to us
One day soon we will come to you
and take our place as Heaven's lights.
So for now, shine bright amongst the stars, Uncle Lloyd,
light our way through the darkest night
Till we meet again in God's Kingdom
Light the way for us to come home.
