A short piece about finding comfort in a world devestated by a viral out break.
The morning light crept silently through a crack inthe steel siding , ans right into Devons eyes. He stirred then sat uplooking for Tyler, he was supposed to be on guard. Devon spotted him high on the cat walk of the warehouse, binoculars trained on something outside. The group had been there a while, after the outbreak had left most of the United States and the rest of the world in shambles. He had been among those that had had started looting when people realized that nobody was comign to help. Even though it went against everything he had been taught he knew that it was the only way he would survive. Devon had seen enough death and disease, so he set out to find a place where the possibility of rebuilding what he once thought of as a life might exist. He had stumbled upon the group while scavenging for food, he had always heard that there was safety in numbers, and joined the traveling band mainly for protection and company.
Tyler stood and quickly walked the length of the cat walk holding his AR14 at the ready. He motioned for Devon to cover the door, Devon retrieved his AR 14 slid the charging handle back and then kicked Edmond.
"What?"
"Wake up the others, Tyler spotted something."
Edmond rolled out of the makeshift bed and began to wake the rest of the group. Suddenly a loud bang echoed through the warehouse.
" Hello, I am here to make business with you." A voice yelled from outside. Tyler peered through an empty window, the man appeared to be a drifter, but did have a good selection of food.
" I have chocolate and chickens, we make good business." The voice said in a heavy asian tone.
Tyler slid his arm through the sling and took the staris two at a time.
" Tyler what the hell is going on?"
" It is a trader, I say we let him in and take a look. We are running a little low on food."
The group agreed, but they would only let him the yard. Two people would stand guard on the cat walk, AR 14's ready just in case things turned ugly. Devon, Tyler and Edmond opened the large sliding door of the warehouse and exited. The remainder of the group close dthe door and took their positions, ready to defend what belonged to them.
" Hello, I come to make business."
Devon opened the gate, Tyler stepped out and in sight of the trader.
" Sir, can I help you?"
" Ah, I come for business. You need, I got."
Tyler looked the man and his truck over. Various assortment of goods, a man in the back with a 50 cal machine gun mounted, and loaded, a passeneger possibly armed.
" Over here sir," Tyler motioned for the man to enter the gate.
The old truck sputtered and rattled its way through the gate, the man in the bed clutching the machine ready to dispell any attack against the trader.
Devon and Edmond look the truck over while Tyler conversed with the trader. Edmond spotted a generator, and several chickens. Devon noticed a large jug of cooking oil and a solar oven, they both looked at Tyler and nodded yes.
" What do you want in trade," Tyler asked the man.
" What you have?"
" I have canned goods, and fresh oranges. I also have a
