A boy learns about home.
I was born between a rock and a hard place in the land,
I didn't like the place called home, but I didn't understand.
I heard of fancy cities with their neon lights aglow,
I heard of their night clubs and I was tired of rodeos.

I was tired of the harvest, always reaping what you sow,
I tired of those early mornings, I knew I just had to go.
I left the farm behind me, I was always on the run,
wasn't time to think straight, but gee, I was having fun.

I found some new adventures, I found a different life,
I found a beautiful woman, and soon she became my wife.
Life moved steadily onward, everything was in hand, but
the thing I didn't count on was the thing I didn't understand.

I was born between a rock and a hard place in the land,
I didn't like the place called home, but I didn't understand.
My daddy told me "Son, you never can leave home,
I don't care where you may go, you never can leave home."

These words that he told me, as a child didn't mean a thing,
I thought he was talking double and I knew I knew everything.
As time moved at a steady pace and to a man I grew,
I learned a lesson ‘bout home and I'm gonna give it to you.

Son, please listen to what I say, you never can leave home,
I don't care where you may go, you never can leave home.
You may say you hate this place, the city is not for you.
You may need a change of pace and find something new.

You were born between a rock and a hard place in the land,
you don't like your home, but someday you'll understand,
that the secret to surviving, from the very start, is
for you, my son, to realize that home is in the heart.
